Now that my chairs were complete, it was now time for me to focus on my bedroom. My bed was my next conquest.

The Princess and the Pea

The idea was to make something super simple that would hide our multiple mattresses. My boyfriend and I had recently moved in together and we each had a mattress. Since we were in a one bedroom we agreed that when family comes to visit, we would have an extra mattress on-hand for them to sleep on.

So that was a major design detail we had to take into account – we didn’t want the bed to look like the princess and the pea slept there! We had to be creative about using our small space, lack of storage and a small budget.

“Eclectic Modern”

I wanted to keep the bed in tone with the look I was trying to achieve in my home which I like to call “eclectic modern”.

It just so happened one day Shane and I stumbled upon a large palette in the back of the warehouse, we both instantly thought this is the perfect fit! Like my chairs, it needed a little elbow grease to make it shine.

DIY Palette Bed

We instantly got to work on the design. To cover my many mattresses, we decide to use a 12” plywood piece to cover the box spring and a little of the second mattress we had. This gave us the illusion that it was a platform bed.

Since the plywood was a new piece, Shane and I used different tools to bang up the wood to add the look of age so it matched the wear and tear of the palette.

All it needed next was a stain. I wanted something warm that would be subtle against my brick walls.

When they were all finished, Shane came to install the bed. He used simple brackets that I purchased from Home Depot to keep the corners together. It took three pieces of wood and a palette to create the exact look I was going for!

The Final Touch – Bronze Lamps with Edison Bulbs

The final touch was my bronze lamps I found at a liquidation store on terminal. They had used shades that were stained so I decided to remove them and put an interesting light bulb in them.

The Edison bulbs I used were versatile; they give off great light and give the room some funk.

Now I finally have a place to rest my head to dream up some more exciting things!
