Flüff Attends Address Assembly on Opening Night

< inspo home

What a delightful way to spend a sunny Thursday evening. I’d heard about Address Assembly having followed its organizer Kate Duncan since seeing her work at 1000 Parker Street studios. An unassuming door on Main Street led to an Aladdin’s cave of delight. From large piece furniture through to decorative pieces you have to have, Assembly had it all! I’ve rounded up a few of my favourite artists, and thoughts on the evening.

Straight up the stairs I discovered the amazing work of Coastal Craftwork, so on trend and charming were these lovely coil rope baskets. They’re perfect for cushions or blankets by the sofa, and come in such lovely soft colours. Carolina, the creator of these beautiful pieces, explained how she handmade the baskets using just rope and a sewing machine!!small rope basket with handletable of ceramic mugs, plants and woven baskets

Moving through to the next room I was instantly drawn to the beautiful work of Joel Sayre. He creates natural wooden furniture, often finished with decorative brass details. I particularly love the tables with a combination of a natural wood form and industrial metal ties. Like Coastal Craftwork, his work is also hand made in Vancouver. I bombarded Joel with questions, and was particularly curious about whether he had come to this point from a wood working or metal working background; he insisted he was a woodworker.

My final and perhaps most inspiring find was the amazing work of Birdman the Welder (Shaun Bird). He created the lovely sofas and fire-pit centered in the middle of the sunny courtyard near the back of the venue. They each had such elegant lines, and the combination of the grey cushions and white powder coated metal was clean and modern. Shaun spoke to me about his process using metal to create a variety of amazing pieces.

I also got a chance to catch up with Kate Duncan, who is not only is the host of Address Assembly, but also creates the beautiful furniture pictured below. We chatted about the events new venue in the Ellis Building, and the more intimate feel of the space. It really is a space you can imagine living in. She explained how Address is a collaboration between her and her partner Amber Kingsnorth from MaK Interiors and how it’s is possible because of the hard work of the exhibitors.

I was impressed by the number of unique well crafted items that are made in the Pacific North West. Everything was such high quality and you could see the talent in the artists exhibiting. There are so many things on my wish list, and the party wasn’t bad either!!
