Vancouver Design Week Kicks Off

< inspo home

This past weekend Vancouver Design Week kicked off with a series of openings and events. The Flüffians checked out some of the open studios and reported back on their favourites. As Vancouver’s official interdisciplinary design festival, VDW aims to celebrate the design community while also bringing awareness to local talent and businesses.

With locations all around the city, many studios opened their doors to the public to give a taste of what they’re working on and inspire other creative people, like us!. Check out some of our highlights from this weekend.

The Launch Party at Alley Oop

We had a great time celebrating opening night with the Vancouver design community at the HCMA Architecture + Design concept space, Alley-Oop. Faculty Brewing provided the beer while the Roaming Dragon food truck provided the grub.

Westerly Shoes

Renee was so lovely as she show us around her studio space. We were taken by her kindness and enthusiasm as she talked about her passion for shoe making. From initial discussions to shoe fittings, it takes around 40 hours to complete a custom pair of Westerly Shoes.

Yew Woodshop & Union Wood Co.

Since our “Warehouse Warriors” have such a keen interest in woodworking and product development, we had to swing by Yew Woodshop and Union Wood Co. Yew Woodshop is a shared space between Daly Co., Willow & Stump, among others. Union Wood Co. is a leader in Vancouver for custom furniture and mill-work. There was no way we would miss out on the opportunity to visit their studio! Check out some of our snaps above and below:

SPACE

The minute you step “aboard” SPACE, you get sucked in by the creative and friendly energy of everyone involved.  An active work space, this weekend marked the launch of “The Orbital Post” where emerging designers can sell their goods.

Renovated Vancouver Special House Tour by D’arcy Jones Architecture

This home tour is the one we all want to see! D’arcy Jones Architecture took a 1981 Vancouver Special and fully renovated – flipping the interior layout while keeping the foundation and structure untouched.  Upon entering you can tell that everything is carefully considered, from the long kitchen island to the floor to ceiling windows, and finally the back patio. To top it all off, the furniture was provided by the Mount Pleasant go-to design store Vancouver Special (we see what they did there). This beauty is every Vancouverites dream home.
