Flüff Styles – Pantone’s Colour of the Year – Ultra Violet

< inspo home

With 2018 comes the reveal of Pantone’s Colour of the Year. This year it’s a bold shade of purple known as Ultra Violet.

The choice of Ultra Violet was influenced by the mystery of the cosmos and the idea of an uncertain and exciting future. Pantone suggests that purple is often connected to creative people, using Prince and David Bowie as examples.

Fashion

As a colour that speaks of individuality we love what Ultra Violet brings to fashion. Purple is a beautiful colour that looks lovely on most people, and it lends itself to bold statement pieces with high drama. We think that rich velvet and gorgeous purple silk will be an amazing addition to our winter wardrobes and formal wear. Our prediction is that we see more dramatic floral with touches of purple for spring and summer.

Purple is also fun in make up and hair styling. We can see the trend in purple hair continuing to be strong for 2018!

Interiors

This colour is trickier to use in interior design, especially a bold and dramatic purple like Ultra Violet. Purple is undeniably a beautiful colour but even visionaries may have trouble incorporating it into their homes. While a vibrant purple chair is luxurious and fun, it’s also expensive and could become dated quickly.

Violet wallpaper in a powder room is nice, or perhaps some fun and funky bedroom accessories. Amethyst are healing, relaxing and add wonderful energy to a space. They are a great organic addition of purple in your home.

We also think that Ultra Violet could have amazing applications in retail design, specifically healing and meditative spaces. The colour would look fantastic as a branding element in a dentist office or other medical interior project.

A dramatically provocative and thoughtful purple shade, PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet communicates originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points us toward the future.

We have gathered some ideas using our own inventory to help you imagine how you can incorporate purple into you home. We have gone a touch lighter than true Ultra Violet.

If you would like to use purple in your home, we suggest you follow these guidelines,

  1. Less is more. Unless you have the budget to re-design every few years, use purple sparingly

  2. Keep furniture neutral

  3. Keep it soft and keep it comfy – touch is so important

  4. Focus on key pieces that are special

  5. Have fun… if you love purple, this is your year!
