How To Decorate with Plaid

< inspo home

Today we’re showing you how to decorate with plaid. Being one of the most classic prints, plaid can add a lot of elegance to a home. Here are some ways to bring it into your home.

HOME STAGING VANCOUVER

First thing’s first, you’ve got to learn your plaids! There are endless amounts of plaids out there, from gingham’s to madras’ to the hundreds of registered Scottish tartans. Here are a few of our favourites.

We love buffalo plaid! It adds a graphic pop to any room. This eating nook has a french country feel, but with a modern update. By mixing in minimalist elements, like all-white walls and bench seating, it veers away from looking too traditional.  The living room looks like it could be in a contemporary cabin (see tips for styling yours here). The rustic drum table is unique and blends nicely with the other pieces. One key thing is to choose whether to keep the buffalo plaid piece as a statement feature or to have it mixed in with other prints. Aim to keep the space looking cohesive rather than scattered (which can easily happen with bold prints!).

These spaces are timeless yet current. It’s important to take elements from trends without going too overboard (or else you’ll be changing your decor every two months!). We love the framed fashion illustrations in the gold frames. They tie in all the elements in this space. The buffalo plaid barstools stand out in the kitchen – which we love! Why not upgrade your current barstools with some plaid? Depending on the style, reupholstering chairs can be done in under 30 minutes! Pair them with a colourful rug to complete the look. See more rug inspiration here and here.

We absolutely love these two spaces. They are fun, bold, and very unique. We love the pink desk against the black and white buffalo print wall. The wall and desk accents add to the fun feel of this space. Check out Urban Outfitters, CB2, and this Etsy shop for fun decor accents.

We always love traditional plaid, but used in a current way. The bedroom has an industrial loft feel but is softened with the raw-edge headboard and sheepskin. Simons, now open on the west coast, has a great selection of affordable plaid bedding. The reading nook in the right image has a mid-century flair. It’s nice to see mid-century pieces done in unexpected fabrics.

The plaid wallpaper adds so much subtle drama to these spaces. It’s a great option for a kitchen or bathroom, and love the idea of keeping a neutral-coloured space. Add black accents, beautiful canisters, and greenery to make it look complete.

This quilted plaid bedding looks so cozy and chic. And how great is the plaid rug?! We would love one of those for inventory (and our personal homes).

Using white tiles with dark grout creates a windowpane look. It adds a Scandinavian minimalist feel to the space, which we love. Add open shelving and counter canisters like these to maintain that clean Scandi look!

Why not add in some windowpane textiles? Bedding and cushions are an affordable way to try out a colour or print. These two light and bright rooms use this print perfectly. The bedding looks great paired with the minalist pendant lamp and the round white mirror. Don’t forget a houseplant as they purify air! Snake plants are a great low-maintenance option. If you want to see other easy houseplants, check out our blog post here. The two side chairs paired with the rustic wood side table create a bright reading nook. We’d love to spend an afternoon here.

These images of Target’s winter campaign are decor perfection. These two spaces are styled in a cozy way, yet look really polished! Find the windowpane occasional chair hereCheck out what Emily Henderson designed for them in the full campaign seen here.

We hope this inspires you to bring this classic print into your home. Remember to pick fun pieces in this print to keep it looking current. Add in pops of it in the form of cushions, bedding, and decor accents. And have fun decorating your space!
